The structure no longer retains its original height: in 1335, following Siena’s victory over the city, the tower was partially demolished, losing about one-third of its height. It was Siena that left a lasting mark on the cityscape by constructing the arch that connects the tower to the Cassero Senese. This imposing structure was not only an architectural addition but also a means of controlling the rebellious citizens of Massa Marittima.
