Housed in the 14th-century Augustinian convent, the Museum of San Pietro all’Orto is a true treasure trove of art and culture in the heart of Massa Marittima.
Its architecture, which has preserved its medieval charm, is centered around a magnificent cloister with original columns and capitals, evoking the atmosphere of a bygone era.
Art Treasures and Marble Stories
The museum tour offers an immersive journey into the art history of the region, showcasing masterpieces by Giovanni Pisano, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, and Gano di Fazio.
Among the most significant pieces are the architectural elements from the Cathedral of San Cerbonius, including the ten enigmatic gray alabaster panels, whose exact dating remains a fascinating mystery.
Particularly captivating is the room dedicated to eleven marble statuettes depicting saints, apostles, and prophets, eight of which are attributed to the Sienese artist Gano di Fazio. In the background, a reconstruction of the cathedral’s façade coronation features three original sculptures, masterpieces attributed to Giovanni Pisano, reviving the ancient grandeur of the Duomo.
The Maestà by Ambrogio Lorenzetti
The collection also includes the extraordinary Maestà by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, known as the Maestà of Massa Marittima. Created around 1335 as an altarpiece for the Church of San Pietro all’Orto, this masterpiece was rediscovered in the 19th century in the cellars of the convent, its significance recognized thanks in part to the annotations of Giorgio Vasari.
