Le Fonti dell’Abbondanza in Massa Marittima are a fascinating example of medieval architecture, blending functionality and art in a uniquely historic setting.
A Medieval Masterpiece of Functionality and Art
Built in 1265 under the leadership of the Pisan podestà Ildebrandino, as stated in the inscription on the second arch, the Fonti dell’Abbondanza served as the main water source for the city. The structure features three pointed arches, leading to three basins that were once filled with water. The upper floor, added in the 15th century, housed the Magazzini dell’Abbondanza (Abundance Warehouses), used for grain storage, ensuring a steady food supply for the community.
The Tree of Fertility: A Unique Fresco
The Fonti dell’Abbondanza are particularly famous for the fresco known as the “Tree of Fertility,” located on the left inner wall. This painting depicts a tree with phallic-shaped fruits, eagerly gathered by numerous female figures in what appears to be a joyous scene. The artwork is interpreted as a propitiatory hymn to life and fertility. Its preservation over the centuries is due to a layer of limestone deposits that unintentionally protected it.
Recent restoration efforts have uncovered additional frescoes dating back to the 13th century, including an image of a woman holding two wild beasts on a leash and warriors guarding the water access tunnel, further enriching the historical and artistic value of the site.
Today, the basins remain empty to better preserve the frescoes, while the upper floor serves as a multifunctional space, hosting events, exhibitions, and conferences throughout the year.
