The Gothic Architecture of Massa Marittima
Located in front of Residence La Fenice, the Church of Sant’Agostino is one of the most significant examples of Gothic architecture in Massa Marittima, second only to the Cathedral of San Cerbonius.
The Church of Sant’Agostino
Built starting in 1299 to replace the ancient San Pietro all’Orto, the church is characterized by a single nave with six imposing pointed arches supporting the wooden beams.
The apse, completed between 1348 and 1351, is the most captivating part of the church, adorned with splayed windows and hanging arches. Two rectangular chapels, dating back to the mid-14th century, complete the structure, giving it harmony and symmetry.
Inside, the church houses valuable artworks, including Saint William by Antonio Nasini, The Visitation and the Nativity of Mary by Rutilio Manetti, The Annunciation by Empoli, and The Flight into Egypt by Lorenzo Lippi. Also of great significance are the relics and a vestment of Saint Bernardino of Siena, who was born in Massa Marittima in 1380.
The bell tower, built in 1627 on the remains of a pre-existing tower, further enriches the historical charm of the church, making it a true symbol of the city.
The Serenity of the Cloister of Sant’Agostino
Adjacent to the Church of Sant’Agostino, the cloister is an architectural gem dating back to the early 14th century. This intimate and harmonious space, with its central courtyard, once served as a place of peace and meditation for the Augustinian community.
The cloister features elegant columns with finely carved capitals, supporting a wooden roof structure. This blend of simplicity and refinement creates a unique atmosphere, perfect for immersing oneself in the tranquility and timeless beauty of the site.
